트랜스매터 리서치 랩 (Transmatter Research Lab, TRL)은 스튜디오 로쿠스 솔루스가 주관하고, 한국문화예술위원회가 후원하는 3년 간의 연구 프로젝트입니다. 김윤철의 예술적 실천과 사유에서 출발한 TRL은 스튜디오를 예술적 제작과 과학적 탐구가 함께 전개되는 연구 중심의 환경으로 확장합니다. 이를 통해, TRL은 물질 연구, 예술적 실험, 그리고 철학적 탐구가 병렬적인 관계가 아니라 하나의 통합된 실천으로서 수렴하는 초학제적 플랫폼으로서 기능하며, 미학, 지각, 인지, 기술, 그리고 물질은 상호 작용하며 함께 생성되는 되어감(becoming)의 장 속에 놓입니다.
TRL은 트랜스매터링(Transmattering)과 매터리얼리티(Mattereality)라는 상호 얽혀 있는 두 개념을 이론적 기반으로 삼고 있습니다. 트랜스매터링은 끊임없이 생성하고 소멸하는 물질의 과정을 가리키며, 이는 자연적이고 인공적인 것, 과학적이고 미적 감각의 것, 물질의 내적 성질과 외적 발현 사이를 진동하는 생성-소멸의 연속 운동입니다. 물질은 기술적 변환을 거치며 감각적이고 살아 있는 물질성으로 재구성되는데, 트랜스매터링은 물질이 스스로 사고하고 작동하며 의미를 생성하는 방식을 드러냅니다.
반면 매터리얼리티는 이러한 생성 운동이 만들어내는 공유된 존재의 장을 일컫습니다. 세계의 그 어떤 것도 독립적으로 존재하지 않으며, 모든 것은 서로와의 얽힘 속에서 함께-발생(co-arise), 함께-반응(co-respond), 함께-진화(co-evolve) 합니다. 따라서 현실은 고립된 대상들의 집합이 아니라, 물질적 상호작용과 공명으로 이루어진 살아 있는 장(field) 이 됩니다. 매터리얼리티는 TRL의 철학적 토대이며, 예술·과학·기술이 하나의 우주-기술적 생태 안에서 전개되는 존재론적 조건을 형성합니다.
TRL의 연구는 전통적 과학 연구처럼 변수를 분리하여 측정하지 않습니다. 대신 물질을 인지·감각·체화의 미학적 장으로 다루고자 합니다. 각 실험은 사유의 수행적 행위가 되며, 예술·과학·기술은 하나의 물질적 의식의 상호 분기된 차원으로 작동합니다. 이때 몸은 외부에서 관찰하는 주체가 아니라, 물질·지각·기계가 새로운 현실을 공동으로 생성하는 공명하는 인터페이스가 됩니다. 이는 단순한 학제 간 협업이 아니라, 경계가 해체되고 새로운 지식의 형태가 발생하는 횡단적 통합(transversal integration)입니다.
Transmatter Research Lab (TRL) is a three-year research initiative organized by Studio Locus Solus with the support of the Arts Council Korea. Rooted in the artistic practice and thoughts of Yunchul Kim, TRL expands the studio into a research-driven environment where artistic creation and scientific investigation unfold together. TRL serves as a transdisciplinary platform where artistic and scientific approaches - encompassing material research, artistic experimentation, and philosophical inquiry converge — not as parallel relations, but as a unified practice in which aesthetics, perception, cognition, technology, and matter are co-constitutively becoming.
TRL is grounded in two interwoven concepts: Transmattering and Mattereality. Transmattering refers to the process in which materials simultaneously undergo creation and dissolution — a continuous oscillation between arising and dissolution that links the natural and the engineered, the scientific and the aesthetic, and internal disposition of matter and its exposition. Through technological transformation, raw material drawn from the elemental world is reconfigured into sensuous, living materiality. Transmattering thus embodies the way matter thinks, acts, and generates meaning through its own movement and modulation.
Mattereality, in turn, designates the shared field of existence that this generative movement gives rise to. Nothing in the world exists independently; everything co-arises, co-responds, and co-evolves within an entangled continuum of relations. Reality, therefore, is not a set of technical objects but a living field of material interactivity and resonance. Mattereality forms the philosophical ground of TRL — an ontology in which art, science, and technology unfold within a single cosmotechnical ecology.
Unlike conventional scientific research, which isolates variables to measure, the TRL approaches matter as an artistic value. Each experiment becomes a performative act of thought — an epistemic practice in which art, science, and technology are inseparable dimensions of a single material consciousness. Here, the body is not a detached observer but a resonant interface through which matter, perception, and machine co-generate new realities. This is not a collaboration between disciplines but a transversal integration, where boundaries dissolve and new hybrid forms of knowledge emerge.
