리리 라이 교수와 김윤철의 대화

릴리 라이(Lili Lai)는 북경대학교 의학인문학과(School of Health Humanities)의 교수이다. 의학의 문화인류학자로서, 현대의 과학과 기술의 발전뿐 아니라 전통 의학 지식 체계에도 함께 주목하며, “물질(material)”, “몸(body)”, “지식(knowledge)”, “실천(practice)”과 같은 근본 개념들을 문화 간 비교의 관점에서 분석하는 연구를 수행한다.
지식의 인류학과 몸의 인류학을 바탕으로 한 그녀의 최근 연구는, 중국 의학에서의 신체 개념과 인공지능 시대에 신체성을 새롭게 사유하려는 포스트휴먼적 제안들 사이의 공명(resonance)을 탐구한다. 저서로는 Hygiene, Sociality and Culture in Contemporary Rural China: The Uncanny New Village (암스테르담 대학 출판부, 2016), 그리고 주디스 파쿠하(Judith Farquhar)와 공저한 Gathering Medicines: Nation and Knowledge in China's Mountain South (시카고 대학 출판부, 2021)이 있다.
김윤철은 예술가이자 전자음악작곡가이다. '트랜스매터(Matter)'와 ‘매터리얼리티(Mattereality)’에 대한 근원적인 질문을 던지며, 그 잠재적 성향을 탐구함으로써 인간의 경험 영역을 넘어서는 상상력과 실재 사이의 가능성들을 작품으로서 실천해왔다. 그는 2016년 유럽입자물리연구소(CERN)의 콜라이드 국제상, 아르스 일렉트로니카의 영예상, VIDA 15.0 등 국제적인 상을 수상했다. 그의 작품은 798CUBE(베이징), 코펜하겐 컨템포러리, 제59회 베니스 비엔날레 한국관, 요코하마 트리엔날레, CCCB(바르셀로나), 사이언스 갤러리(멜버른), FACT (리버풀), 프랑크푸르트 미술관, ZKM (카를스루에) 등에서 전시되었다. 고등과학원의 리서치 그룹 ‘매터리얼리티’의 책임연구원, 예술과 과학 프로젝트 그룹 'Fluid Skies’와 ‘Liquid Things’의 멤버로 활동했다. 현재 서울에 위치한 스튜디오 로쿠스 솔루스(Studio Locus Solus)의 설립자이다.

Lili Lai teaches at the School of Health Humanities of Peking University. As a cultural anthropologist of medicine, her work engages both with contemporary developments in medical science and technology and with traditional medical knowledge systems, aiming to offer cross-cultural analyses of some foundational concepts such as “material,” “body,” “knowledge,” and “practice.” Drawing on expertise in the anthropology of knowledge and the anthropology of the body, Lai’s current project investigates the resonance between conceptions of the body in Chinese medicine and posthuman proposals to reimagine embodiment in the era of artificial intelligence. Her monographs include Hygiene, Sociality and Culture in Contemporary Rural China: The Uncanny New Village (Amsterdam University Press, 2016), and Gathering Medicines: Nation and Knowledge in China's Mountain South, co-authored with Judith Farquhar (The University of Chicago Press, 2021).
Yunchul Kim is an artist and electroacoustic music composer. Asking fundamental questions about "transmatter” and “matteriality,” he has demonstrated the possibilities of imagination and the creation of a reality beyond the realm of human experience, paying attention to its potential tendencies. He has won international awards, including the 2016 Collide International Award from CERN, Ars Electronica, and the VIDA 15.0 Third Prize. His works have been shown at the 798CUBE, Beijing; Copenhagen Contemporary; Korean Pavilion, 59th Venice Biennale, Venice; Yokohama Triennale; CCCB, Barcelona; Science Gallery Melbourne, Melbourne; FACT Liverpool; Frankfurt Museum of Art; and ZKM, Karlsluhe. He was a chief researcher of the research group Mattereality at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study, and a member of the art and science project group Fluid Skies and Liquid Things. He is a founder of Studio Locus Solus in Seoul.
